ALBUM REVIEW: OMEGAVORTEX – BLACK ABOMINATION SPAWN

Totally unknown to me, just another album, half way through a glass of the red stuff, if I had kids they would be in bed, etc. There was no reason for me to sit up quite as fast as I did. As soon as this delirious blend of acridly aggressive black metal, semi-hallucinogenic reverberations and downright bluesy solos rumbled forth from the speakers, I was hooked. And sitting up very straight.

There’s a lot going on here but, strangely, its allure is that it doesn’t in any way sound complicated. I can sense the cauldron-noise of bands like Blut Aud Nord, the out and out heaviness of early US death metal like Morbid Angel, the barbarism of black metal bands like Craft as well as some melodies and fretboard walkings that wouldn’t be out of place in 1987. Put them all together, this is a unique and very attractive sound.

In a year when everything has been a tiny little bit shitty and when the rivers of new music seem to have slowed and, in places, begun to dry up, this is a very welcome ear filler. I don’t have one bad word to say about it. ‘Black Abomination Spawn’ is exactly what it says on the front cover – filthy, horrible, otherworldly, dank. And there’s the one word review – dank.

9/10
